| Kandy and the surrounding hill country are where the world famous tea is grown. Kandy is famed for its magnificent golden toothed temple, Dalada Maligawa, which houses the sacred tooth relic of the Buddha. Other features include the Royal Botanical Gardens, elephant Orphange and in July/August the 10 day medieval festival/pagent. For two weeks at the end of July and into the first few days of August, the hill town of Kandy is transformed to the way it was before it fell to the British in 1815. Elephants parade the streets at night, officia island chieftains wear traditional costume and dancers leap to the timeless rhythm of the drums | |||||||||||
